OPEN HOUSE- ELECTION 2011

The results of the 2011 Board of Supervisor Election are as follows;
Ron Smoker and Robin Boggs have been re-elected to three year terms beginning in 2012.


The Ashtabula Soil and Water Conservation District
will be holding an Open House and Election for Board of Supervisors Tuesday, November 22nd, Noon- 6:00 pm at the
District located at 39 Wall Street in Jefferson

Election to cast a ballot for election of supervisors will
be from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm.

The Board of Supervisors will hold the monthly board
meeting at 6:00 pm after the election.

Ashtabula County SWCD will be electing two supervisors on November 22, 2011. If you cannot attend the Open House and voting period, below  find out who is eligible and how to vote by absentia.

OHIO SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION COMMISSION ELECTION LEGAL NOTICE 

The Ohio Soil and Water Conservation Commission will have an election of Supervisors of the Ashtabula Soil and Water Conservation District to be held in accordance with Chapter 1515 of the Ohio Revised Code.

Residents or landowners, firms, and corporations that own land or occupy land in Ashtabula County and are 18 years of age and older may vote for Supervisor. A non-resident landowner, firm or corporation must provide an affidavit of eligibility, which includes designation of a voting representative, prior to casting a ballot (available on the District’s website.)  

There are three ways an eligible voter can cast a ballot:  

(1) at the open house if you are attending, which will take place November 22, 2011. Voting will take place between 3:00 pm until 5:00pm 

 (2) In person at the Ashtabula County SWCD office between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Monday through Friday to the District, no earlier than 21 days prior and not later than 4:00 p.m. the day of the open house November 22, 2011 via absentee ballot and procedure.

 (3) Vote absentee by requesting the proper forms. The absentee request forms are posted on our website http://www.ashtabulaswcd.org/. Requested ballots must be returned to the District office no later than 3:00 p.m. on November 22, 2011,  at the following address: Ashtabula County Soil and Water Conservation District, 39 Wall Street, Jefferson, OH 44047 phone number: 440-576-4946.  Requests for absentee ballots can not be accepted no earlier than 21 days prior and not later than 5 days prior to the open house on November 22, 2011.

Note: Due to greatly reduced budget and reduced staffing, please call the office prior to travelling to the office to cast an absentee ballot or pick up request form to confirm District staff or available in the office to service your request and not in the field servicing a landowners conservation need.

     Results of the Election will be posted on District's Web 
                                Site by November 24th.

Two (2) Supervisors will be elected. Nominees are:  Robin Boggs, Ron Smoker and Gary Rutter.  

2011 Candidates 

Robin Boggs -   Robin and Debbie Boggs began their farming operation in Andover, Ohio in 1977.  Known as Alfa Creek Farms, they along with son Randy and daughter Niki farm 450 acres and milk cows with approximately replacement heifers.  Past conservation practices include construction of waterways, a waste storage facility, thousands of feet of drainage tile, expanded their dairy and implemented an easement to protect their property in the years to come.  Robin was a member of the Ashtabula Soil and Water Conservation District Board from 1982 to 1987.  While on the board he served as Secretary.  On July 2006 he was appointed by the commission to fill the unexpired term of Brian Miller. 

Gary Rutter -  Gary Rutter has called Ashtabula County home since the early ‘80’s when he decided to get out the city.  He is retired and resides in Rome Township on 75 acres of land in which his “spare time” is spent hunting and fishing.  Gary has been involved in conservation he entire life with past groups/activities which include: Chagrin Valley Fish and Game Club, Buckeye Retriever Club and Ducks Unlimited.  Within each of these groups he was a very active member organizing field days, banquets and many other club activities. 

On his Rome Township property he has rehabilitated a lake for fishing, planted many trees/ wildlife habitat projects, performed woodland management, drainage improvement projects and installed an approximate 12 acre wetland.  

 Ron Smoker - Ron is the owner/operator of Smoker & Son/Geneva materials; a logging and sawmill facility located in Geneva.  He was born and raised in Lake County but moved to Austinburg in 1983 where he resides with his wife Patricia of 39 years.  They have one son, Matthew, who lives in Bay Village.  Ron is the third generation hardwood lumber dealer and manufacturer.  He is a member of the Ohio Forestry Association for 23 years and was the 1999 Northeast Ohio Logger of the Year.    He was a founding member and past president of the Northeast Ohio Loggers chapter and was a former Trustee and past President of the Ravinewood Homeowners Association.    Ron has been an Associate Supervisor with the Ashtabula Soil and Water Conservation District Board since 1999; and as a board member since 2006.  Since service on the board he has held the positions of Chairman and Vice-Chairman. 

  "Forestry is playing a greater and greater roll in conservation and I feel that my 50+ years of experience can be of help in making decisions to preserve our natural resources and environment for now and years to come".
